City of Caves
City of Caves, Nottingham
How about a tour of the Nottingham Caves where you will descend into a hidden world underneath the city of Nottingham? Dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, the network of caves were used throughout the ages from a medieval tannery to air raid shelters in World War II, and children will love exploring this exciting attraction.
City Of Caves is part of a complex of up to 400 caves, the last of which were in use until around 1924, and Nottingham has more man-made caves than anywhere else in Britain. Originally known as "Tiggua Cobaucc", there are references as far back as 900 AD, used for housing as early as the 11th century, and troglodytes were certainly recorded in the 17th century.
The cave network has Ancient Monument Protection but is open to the general public to offer a great family day out. Indeed a visit to City Of Caves allows the whole family to experience an unusual and gripping tour of Nottingham beneath the surface, and is arranged in various dedicated sections focusing on certain themes from the caves past.
